Room 307: After the picnic
Coraline carried her bags into her room - or rather, their room, she thought to herself - and set them down in the middle of the floor.

Leaving the door open, she carefully opened both closets and all the drawers, and then crouched down to look under both beds. Satisfied there was nothing there that shouldn't be there, she dragged a chair over to the vent and climbed up to peer inside it.

Just in case.

[open, but especially for the roomie!]

Lucas came back from the picnic to find his roommate looking in a vent. And he thought things couldn't be weirder after meeting a Brooke from the future.

"Um, Coraline? What are you doing?"

"I'm checking the vent," Coraline replied as if it was a perfectly normal thing to do. She hopped down off the chair and smiled. "It's only a vent."

She walked over to stand by her bags. "I didn't want to pick a bed until you got here."

"Was there something else it was supposed to be?" Lucas asked, dumping his bags on the floor.

Lucas didn't care about which bed he got. "So, choose now!"

"Sometimes things aren't what they're supposed to be. It's better if it doesn't come as a surprise," she informed him seriously, then grinned and bounced down onto the bed to the right of the window. "This one!"

Lucas decided not to question her. Instead, he tossed himself onto the bed to the left of the window, testing it for comfort and bounce.

"This is a pretty nice room. What's behind that door?" He pointed.

"Why don't you go and see," Coraline said mischievously. She knew it was a bathroom. "If it's something strange, I promise to come and rescue you."

He glanced over at her, "You enjoy messing with me too much."

That didn't stop him from getting up and walking over to the door. He turned the knob slowly before suddenly yanking the door open and screaming. Just because he could.

Coraline leapt up and ran over before she had a chance to think about whether it was a good idea or not.

When she saw there was nothing on the other side of the door but the bathroom - no bricks, no dark corridors, no spiderwebs - she reached right up and smacked him on the shoulder as hard as she could.

Which wasn't very hard at all.

Lucas laughed so hard he nearly doubled over when she smacked him. "That was some rescue!"

The only possible response to that was to smack him again and flounce over to her bags. "See if I rescue you next time," Coraline told him, carrying her computer over to her desk. "You'll be the Lucas who cried wolf."

It was a lie, of course; she'd always rescue him, but he didn't need to know that.

"I swear I'll never do fake it again, Coraline," Lucas said, giving her the boy scout sign. He took her cue and moved his bags over to his new bed to start unpacking books.

"Well," she studied him over her shoulder while she slid the shiny new computer out of its bag and onto the desk. "Okay. I forgive you. I'll still rescue you."

Coraline grinned as she looked around their room. "We need to make this room more interesting," she decided. "Do you think we'd get in too much trouble if we painted it?"

"Thanks," he said, looking down at his books and wondering if he'd need to invest in a bookshelf.

"We might need to do more than paint," he considered. "What about rearranging things a little?"

"Good idea," she said, walking slowly around the room. "We could put the desks together, back to back? Over here," she waved a hand at the corner under the vent. "It would give us more space." And it would be different, which was what she wanted.

"For our books." Coraline glanced at him and smiled slyly. "You get the top shelves. And we could move the beds," she put her hands on her hips and stared at them, as if she expected them to begin offering ideas, "somewhere."

Surveying the space around them, he couldn't help but think 'somewhere' was the only place for the beds.

"You have a lot of books?" he asked, curiously.

"Not with me," she said. "I'd read all the ones at home, but my mother bought me some for the trip. And there'll be school books once classes start."

Coraline wandered over and lay down on her bed. Maybe the actual moving of the furniture could happen tomorrow. It had been a very long day. "Did you bring many books with you?"

"I didn't know how much space I'd have, but I brought a bunch in my bag," he said, pushing his stuff to the side so he could lounge better on his bed.

"We should play twenty questions."

Coraline considered that. She'd never played twenty questions before, but she had seen it on television. "Okay," she said, smiling as she folded her pillow up under her head. "Do you want to ask questions first, or will I?"

She sounded quite pleased about this.

"From what I've been told, they are, but I'm going to find out for certain. You should come with me." Coraline twisted around until she was sitting cross-legged, facing him, blowing hair out of her face. "Didn't he warn you about the weird things that happen here?"

"To watch out for gremlins, which bite people and make them believe they're something they aren't, that there are random attacks from various creatures, including dinosaurs."

Coraline said this all very matter of factly. "I met a boy who can control water and make an instrument appear from mid-air, and he warned me about mermaids, and again about gremlins. The gremlins were one of the reasons I was checking the vent."

"Don't forget the dinosaurs." She glanced up at the vent and smiled, just a little. "But they'd be too big to fit in the vent, at least. Tomorrow we'll start with zombies, and then we can explore and see what else we can find."

It was always very important to know exactly where the things you were worried about were, so you could avoid them properly.

He could accept the role of tall person in their friendship. "Mostly I like reading and playing basketball," he replied. "But there's no team here, so I'm kind of at a loss."

And don't think there wasn't a lot of complaining about that fact when his mom decided on Fandom.
